WWE Speed has already taken a tide on the internet a few months after its induction. The title has found its relevance among the mid-carders who have been failing to get enough screen time on shows like Raw and Smackdown. Everything started in March 2024 when WWE came up with the idea to include an 'Internet' Championship named 'WWE Speed'.
The concept from WWE was to have a title named 'WWE Speed Championship' where the wrestlers from all three rosters could take part in it. The winner would emerge after beating their opponent in a 5-minute match. Given how quickly a match could be needed, the name 'Speed' emerged. These matches are exclusively streamed on WWE's official channel on YouTube. Hence, the title is regarded as the 'Internet' Championship.
On the 27th of March 2024, WWE officially announced the title. Ricochet, who was doing extremely well as a wrestler at the time, won the championship on his debut. Back then, fans wondered what it was all about. In fact, many regular watchers of Raw and Smackdown had no idea about it. But in the days to come, many tuned in to know what it was.
Andrade, the current and the longest reigning Speed Champion
The wrestlers need to be able to take their opponents out in a quick time. It hence needs one to be skillful and quick enough. As Ricochet's contract with the company came to an end and he refused to re-sign it, the title had to be taken away from him. Hence, in a match for the WWE Speed title on the 7th of June 2024, Andrade overcame him to become the new champion.
Since then, the Smackdown star has been the champion for over 76 days making him the longest reigning champion for now. Ricochet was erased from WWE TV as Bron Breakker did the heavy work and sent him through an ambulance on Raw. Every Wednesday, WWE's YouTube channel streams the Speed Championship matches and the contenders who wish to take part in the qualifier matches to earn a shot at the title.
