Steam Game Recording is not out of beta and is available to the masses for an easy video game recording experience. Added back in June as part of beta testing, the new game record feature allows players to record, edit, and share clips of games. This was a much-needed feature, as people won’t have to open external pieces of software.

Not only does the new feature allow the ability to edit, but it also has some incredible features that are easy to use and practical. These include custom markers players can put on highlights, however, there are also automatic markers that will mark relevant events like a clutch or multi-kills across games.

Game Mode Indicators will highlight timeline appearance when players are in a lobby or menus to quickly navigate to or around it. While editing, players can share clips with others or keep them to be coveted into a video file and exported later on.

The share feature will likely be more popular among console gamers, who already have the option to save and share clips with the press of a button. By default, the gameplay recordings will be saved in a different format, similar to game demos. This feature is also available on Steam Deck.

Players can choose 'Record in Background', which will start recording as soon as the game starts, but will only keep the designated time while removing any further records. 'Record manually' will allow players to start recording manually. If they want to turn off the feature, select Recording Off.

Steam game recording works on every game

The recording feature works on all games including external games as long as they allow Steam Overlay as it is the backbone of this feature. Although, for the best experience, it is better to customize all things manually beforehand. Duration, quality and other aspects can also be controlled via the game record-setting.

Another great feature is that since it is overlay-based, it only records the game window, so players don’t need to worry about accidentally ATL tabbing and recording their desktop or other apps. This functionality also uses dedicated video encoding hardware on GPUs, so much lower impact on the CPU.

Here’s how to configure game recording on Steam -

1. In the upper left corner, select Steam then Settings
2. Scroll down to navigate ‘Game Recording’
3. Select the type of recording you want, ‘Background or Manually’
4. Customize shortcut
5. Configure settings with length of the recording and quality
6. Scroll down for recording options including frame rate, audio options, encoding and others

This new game recording feature certainly brings a lot to the table and will likely make various other recording methods like Nvidia Shadowplay obsolete. As of now, people generally need to record using one software and edit using another. The ability to do everything in a single place without worrying about making your PC a heater is highly appreciated.

That isn’t to say people will not use other recording and editing software, but for most people, Steam Game Record will be more than enough with all the features packed in a single place, which will only evolve with time.
