The latest developer update from Apex Legends have some bad news for Steam Deck users, as the team is moving away from Linux support in order to improve the cheater situation. This not only affects players on the Steam Deck but also any Linux user in general in order to maintain the competitive integrity of the game.

“In our efforts to combat cheating in Apex, we've identified Linux OS as being a path for a variety of impactful exploits and cheats. As a result, we've decided to block Linux OS access to the game. While this will impact a small number of Apex players, we believe the decision will meaningfully reduce instances of cheating in our game,” the official post wrote.

This decision comes after multiple hacking instances and cheaters in general for casual gamers inside Apex Legends. One of the infamous ALGS hack was also a big matter for the game, where PCs for professional players were remotely hacked during the tournament.

With the news spreading that players can have their system hacked by playing the game, many people did not log for quite some time, resulting in a loss of active player count. “Apex Legends will be unplayable immediately for those running this operating system. Playing on handhelds, such as the Steam Deck, is still possible if the user opts to install Windows,” they added.

Most cheaters are using Linux

Linux in general doesn’t share a huge part in the industry, and EA (Electronic Arts) claims that the impact has been very large in the cheating scene. This is due to how accessible the operating system is in general, making it easier for a cheater to bypass security measures.

At the moment, it seems that the company does not plan on spending money to fix an issue with such low number of players. Many other games also do not provide Linux support for a similar reason, these include both League of Legends and Valorant.
