The ongoing Monster Hunter Wilds beta is dominating the steam charts, reaching almost half a million players. This comes ahead of the game’s launch in February 2025. The game amassed a large audience within an hour of release and has broken the player count records set by the previous Monster Hunter games.

This should not come as a surprise as Monster Hunter games has been quite popular. The beta reached over 460,00 players. To compare, Monster Hunter World saw a peak player count of 334,684 on Steam. The beta is also available across PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, so the original numbers will be much higher.

While it is true that these numbers are possibly because it is a free beta compared to the full priced game at $70, there is clearly a bigger audience for these type of games, and this open beta will allow players to check out what kind of performance they can expect in the full release if they plan on purchasing.

A hefty requirement for PC gamers

The open beta for Monster Hunter Wilds consists of two hunts from the story quest, one of them is the tutorial Chatacabra hunt where players can get to know about the mechanics. The second one is Doshaguma Hunt, which players can do alone or with friends/NPCs. Apart from the trial stuff, players can also explore a decent bit of the open world, with more to be added with the full release.

As for the performance, the recommended requirement does seem to stand on their words. In our testing with an RTX 3060ti paired with R5 5600X, the game ran at 40–50 fps with everything cranked high with DLSS on balanced. Lower the setting to medium gave 60–70 fps, but still saw dips in the lower 50s occasionally.

Since it is just a beta the size of the game was 23 GB, however, the specifications reveal that the full game will be around 140 GB. Capcom did say that this is not the final product and few aspects such as game specifications and balance may differ in the full version.
