The riveting month-long fixture of the T20 World Cup 2024 has come to an end and it's time for cricket pundits and the media to give their analysis and the best XI for the tournament. A fitting end to the World Cup as India clinched the crown after dominating throughout the tournament. They defeated South Africa by seven runs in a final-over thriller in Barbados to clinch their second T20 world title.

Sports.info has come up with their 'Team of the Tournament', featuring six players from the champion team. One of the notable omissions from the team was Virat Kohli, who won the Player of the Match in the final. The ace cricketer, who brought down the curtain on his T20I career after the historic win, had failed to perform in the rest of the matches.

Rohit Sharma (Inns – 8, Runs – 257, Avg – 36.71, Sr - 156.71) - Captain

Rohit Sharma led his team from the front with ferocious striking. The veteran opener scored 257 runs in eight innings at an average of 36.71 and a healthy strike rate of 156.71. He finished the tournament as the second-leading run-scorer. Rohit slammed three half-centuries in the series, with his best knock coming against Australia in India’s final Super 8 match - 92 in just 41 balls. There is no better captaincy option than the man who ended India's 11-year trophy drought.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Inns – 8, Runs - 281, Avg - 35.12, Sr - 124.33)

Afghanistan had an excellent World Cup campaign that made them the second-best Asian team in the tournament. The main credit goes to the openers who combined to score over 440 runs and made three century stands in the series. Gurbaz was exceptional as he finished with 281 runs in eight innings to become the highest run-scorer. The right-hander also smashed three match-winning fifties. 

Nicholas Pooran (Inns – 7, Runs - 228, Avg – 38.00, Sr – 146.15)

Nicholas Pooran is the all-time leading run-scorer for West Indies in T20Is. The pocket dynamo did justice to his reputation by leading the batting unit with 228 runs from seven innings at a strike rate of 146.15. His best innings came against Afghanistan in their final group-stage match, where he scored 98 off 53 balls – the highest score of the tournament.

Suryakumar Yadav (Inns – 8, Runs - 199, Avg – 28.43, Sr – 135.37)

Suryakumar Yadav was not consistent throughout the tournament but played a crucial role In India’s successful campaign. The No. 4 batter scored 199 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 135.37, including two half-centuries. However, India will be grateful to him for his crucial 47 runs in the semi-final against England and his title-winning catch in the final against South Africa.

Marcus Stoinis (Matches – 7, Runs - 169, Avg – 42.25, Sr – 164.08, Wickets - 10)

Australia had a terrible campaign, missing out on the semi-finals. However, Marcus Stoinis stood out with his all-round excellence. He scored 169 runs at a staggering strike rate of 164.08, including two match-winning half-centuries against Oman and Scotland. He also took 10 wickets with a best figure of 3/19 against Oman.

Hardik Pandya (Matches – 8, Runs - 144, Sr – 151.57, Wkts: 11, Eco – 7.64)

Hardik Pandya will be the second fast-bowling all-rounder in the team. Pandya was instrumental in India’s triumphant outing. Batting in the lower middle order, the right-hander slammed 144 runs at an impressive strike rate of 151.57. He also grabbed 11 wickets at an economy of 7.64. His most significant contribution came in the final, where he took three wickets including the big wicket of Heinrich Klaasen.

Axar Patel (Matches – 8, Runs – 92, Sr – 139.39, Wickets – 9, Eco – 7.86)

Axar Patel is the unsung hero of Team India in this tournament. He contributed significantly to all three departments. His batting performance in the final, where he scored a counter-attacking 47 runs when the team was in crisis, will forever be remembered. In the semi-final against England, the left-arm spinner recorded figures of 3/23 with the ball. And how crucial was his breathtaking catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh in the match against Australia?

Rashid Khan (Inns – 8, Wkts - 14, Avg – 12.78, Eco – 6.17, Best figure – 4/17)

Rashid Khan led Afghanistan to their maiden World Cup semi-final. The right-arm leg-spinner took 14 wickets in eight innings at a brilliant economy of 6.17. He led the team from the front and produced a brilliant performance against Bangladesh (4/23, 19*) that helped his team reach the semi-finals. His 4/17 against New Zealand in the group stage was also crucial.

Jasprit Bumrah (Inns – 8, Wkts - 15, Avg – 8.26, Eco- 4.17, Best figure – 3/7)

The Player of the Tournament and arguably the most valuable player in the Indian cricket team at the moment. Jasprit Bumrah was a beast in the tournament, playing a crucial role in almost every match India played. He took 15 wickets at a whopping economy rate of 4.17 - the best ever by any bowler in a single edition of the men's T20 World Cup.

Arshdeep Singh (Inns – 8, Wkts – 17, Avg – 12.64, Eco – 7.16, Best figure – 4/19)

Arshdeep Singh finished the tournament joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 scalps. The left-arm pacer has been excellent with the new ball and has been a great companion for Bumrah. He played a crucial role in the final, taking two crucial wickets and conceding only four runs in the penultimate over.

Fazalhaq Farooqi (Inns – 8, Wkts - 17, Avg – 9.41, Eco – 6.31, Best figure – 5/9)

Farooqui, the tournament's joint leading wicket-taker, was instrumental in leading Afghanistan to a historic campaign. His 5/9 against Uganda is the best spell of the tournament. He also helped Afghanistan beat New Zealand by four wickets. In fact, the left-arm pacer was the main force behind his team's early boost in this series.
