Fernando Alonso has added his voice to calls for Max Verstappen to maintain professionalism in public, following the reigning champion's row with the FIA at the Singapore Grand Prix. Verstappen, who has been under scrutiny for his language and attitude in recent weeks, now faces pressure from multiple F1 legends to tone down his behaviour and act more like the champion he is.

Verstappen, a three-time World Champion, was reprimanded by the FIA for using foul language in a press conference before the Singapore GP. As part of his punishment, he was required to participate in public interest work. This incident came shortly after FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem called for a crackdown on swearing by drivers, making a comparison between the behaviour expected in motorsports and that seen in rap music.

Verstappen's response was one of resistance, as he refused to engage meaningfully in further media interactions throughout the race weekend. In a show of defiance, he even held a separate media session outside the formal FIA gatherings, following his qualifying run. While Verstappen's rebellious attitude gained support from some, including his long-time rival Lewis Hamilton, who advised him to ignore the punishment, others are now stressing the need for better conduct.

What did Alonso say?

Alonso, speaking at a sponsored event in India, echoed Hamilton’s sentiments but took a more reflective tone. The two-time World Champion emphasized the importance of being a role model for fans. “I’ve met a lot of fans around the world who follow Formula 1, and they always tell you that you are their inspiration. This reminds us that there are a lot of people watching us,” Alonso said.

He continued by stressing the responsibility that comes with the public’s admiration. “When you are a driver, you have to behave properly. The fans give you a lot of love and motivation, but also a lot of responsibility. You have to be prepared to be a role model, whether you want to be or not,” Alonso added.

Alonso’s message to Max Verstappen, while firm, highlights the broader impact that high-profile athletes have on their fanbase. He called for drivers to be mindful of their words and actions, regardless of their frustrations or off-track pressures. “You have to control yourself and be politically correct,” Alonso advised.
