In his final match at SNME, John Cena gave up against Gunther, which led to a huge criticism from the fans. Triple H's booking, in particular, was criticised by the fans, who chanted 'You f***ed up' after the end of the match. Fans believed Cena should have retired by passing out or getting pinned, rather than giving up.

There is a good chance that Cena himself pushed for the result of his match being in Gunther's favor. For 20 years, Cena had not tapped out, especially since his gimmick of 'Never Give Up' started. Hence, it came as a shocker for the fans to witness him give up in his final match.

Gunther joined Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, and Kurt Angle in the elite list of wrestlers to have forced John to give up. From WWE's point of view, it is one of the generational pushes for the Ring General, which was similar to Brock Lesnar ending The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak in 2014.

What could've been a better result to please fans?

Fans are upset that Cena gave up to someone whom they thought did not need a push as big as he got. It is worth noting that Jey Uso forced Gunther to tap out at WrestleMania earlier this year. Hence, fans questioned WWE's booking to have Gunther tap Cena out.

A better way probably would have been to let Cena pass out, than to tap out. That way, fans would not have been highly disappointed with WWE's booking. It would have given Gunther the breakthrough, although not to the point he has gotten currently. Only Gunther's ascend to the top can justify WWE's decision to have Cena tap out.
