Recently, the ATP Finals took place, culminating in Jannik Sinner being crowned the Master of 2024. During this edition of the tournament, Tennis star and world number five, Daniil Medvedev participated in a funny yet insightful discussion with Tennis Channel, where he shared his thoughts on which players among the participants he would select based on specific qualities.
Medvedev's perfect Tennis player
The Question started with which player he would pick with the best mental game; Daniil Medvedev confidently chose himself as the player with the best mental game. He praised Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz for his exceptional connection with fans, recognizing Alcaraz's ability to perform delicate plays with remarkable finesse, which resonates well with the audience.
Medvedev also commended Italian world number one, Jannik Sinner, for being exceptionally calm under pressure, praising Sinner's ability to maintain composure during crunch moments.
As the conversation wrapped up, the topic turned to player celebrations, and Medvedev again opted for himself. He humorously noted that while he may not often celebrate on the court, his winning moves are the best.
Not a great season for the Russian
The Russian champion concluded 2024 without securing a single title, a disappointing outcome that will undoubtedly lead him to undertake serious reflections during the off-season.
In a press conference at the ATP Finals, Medvedev expressed his diminishing interest in playing tennis and reiterated his frustrations with the balls.
As one of the most anticipated players for the upcoming Australian Open, a tournament he has consistently participated in but has yet to conquer, the former world number 1 will be under scrutiny.
“I don't think next season will be easier for Daniil. Maybe even more difficult than 2024 season. He has a few problems in the game plan, which I don't really know how to solve as a coach. How can he compete with Sinner and Alcaraz? And it will be just as difficult to compete with Zverev. And I don't see how that can be solved at the moment. His team is probably looking for ways to evolve. Staying between 4th to 10th place is the most likely evolution. As for winning a Grand Slam title and moving up to first or second place in the ranking, the question arises.” Ivan Pridankin, Medvedev's former coach asserted.
