Jannik Sinner finished his outstanding season by leading Italy to victory in the Davis Cup. He dominated Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets, securing the win for the defending champions, Italy. Sinner emphasized the significance of the competition for him, stating that Italy excelled in the final. However, he also expressed his heartbreak over the WADA doping appeal against him.

Sinner jubilant over Davis Cup victory

Jannik Sinner expressed how meaningful it is for him to lead Italy to consecutive Davis Cup titles, culminating in an incredible year for the team. As the World No. 1, Sinner secured a 2-0 victory for Italy against the Netherlands in the final by defeating Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets.

"It's a very important competition for the whole of Italy, you have different pressure and different weight of having Italy on your shoulders. But I think we all handled it really, really well. If it wouldn't be important, I wouldn't be here."  Sinner said

"For me, it means so much to me because last year Matteo was not here as a player but he supported us which gave us a lot of strength and this year sharing this moment, especially with this group," he added.

In the first set, Sinner showcased his resilience by saving the only two break points and ultimately claiming the set in a tie-breaker. He then demonstrated his dominance in the second set, breaking Griekspoor three times to secure the win, following Matteo Berrettini's earlier victory over Botic van de Zandschulp.

Sinner's take on the doping controversy

Although Sinner's 2024 season was nearly flawless on the court, he enters the new year facing an unresolved doping appeal.

The world No. 1 was cleared of any wrongdoing by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after testing positive for clostebol earlier this year. In light of recent developments, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has decided to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the case of the Italian player. They are advocating for a suspension of not less than two years.

“All the people around me know me as a human being & trust me. That’s also the reason I kept playing at the level I had. I had ups & downs…was emotionally down & a bit heartbroken. Sometimes life gives you difficulties & you just have to stand for it.” Sinner concluded.
