The atmosphere in the KIA Arena was electric, with many fans fiercely supporting her opponent, Australia’s Destanee Aiava, during their matchup in the Australian Open on Thursday.

Collins took a dig at the local crowd

During the break of play after a fiercely contested first set, which the American player secured 7-6(4) against local favourite Aiava, she playfully blew a kiss to the crowd. However, as she served in the second set with the atmosphere becoming more challenging, she asked a spectator to keep quiet while enduring some boos from the audience. At one point, she took a medical timeout to receive treatment on her foot while her Australian opponent was leading the set 5-2. This led to the crowd booing her even more.

Collins dropped the second set but made a powerful comeback in the third, dominating Aiava with a 6-2 victory to clinch the match 7-6(4) 4-6 6-2.

Following her victory, both Collins and the crowd were unrelenting in their pursuit to irritate the other. She then cupped her hand around her ear and blew sarcastic kisses to the spectators, fully embracing the moment.

The former Australian Open finalist is set to face fellow American and 19th seed Madison Keys in the 3rd Round. Earlier today, Keys secured her place by defeating Romania’s Elena Gabriela Ruse in three sets.

“You know, I was thinking during the match … if I’m out here I might as well just take that big, fat paycheck. Coco (Gauff) and I love a good five-star vacation, so part of that check is going to go towards that. So thank you guys! Thanks for coming out here and supporting us tonight,” Collins cheekily took a dig at the crowd in the post match interview.
