WATCH: Rodri equalizes for Spain after unexpected own goal against Georgia

At Euro 2024, Spain is facing Georgia with hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals. After surprising favorites, Portugal in a thrilling Group F finale to advance through to their first major international tournament as one of the top four third-place finishers, Georgia heads to RheinEnergieStadion amid a footballing fairytale that has sparked scenes of absolute euphoria back in Tbilisi. 

The winners will face hosts Germany in a Stuttgart quarterfinal on Friday. Spain, who had the luxury of making numerous changes the previous game, is expected to call up all of its best players, including Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Alvaro Morata now that midfield star Rodri is back from suspension.

Spain topped Group B, easily defeating strong opponents. They easily defeated Croatia and Italy before a rotating lineup beat Albania 1-0 in their last group game. They now face a determined Georgian team full of confidence following their historic victory against Portugal.

Under Willy Sagnol, Georgia has grown more confident in their ability to make history because of the play of Metz striker Georges Mikautadze, who has been linked to West Ham, and Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Rodri provides breakthrough for Spain

They finally got through in the 39th minute, when Rodri found himself in space on the outskirts of the box and sent a left-footed drive past the Georgia goalkeeper and into the bottom corner. Rodri scored an equalizer as Spain and Georgia were 1-1 at halftime in the European Championship round of 16 on Sunday. Despite this early loss, Spain proceeded to control the ball and test their opponent's defence, gaining an amazing 79% possession.

Ealier Spain surrendered a own goal for the first time in the competition in the 18th minute of their game against Euro 2024's lowest-ranked side.  Despite being pressured by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, defender Robin Le Normand diverted Georgia right-back Otar Kakabadze's cross past his goalkeeper.
