Former FIFA World Cup-winning centre-back Mats Hummels is set to hang up his boots following the conclusion of the current season. He announced his retirement from the sport on his social media.
Mats Hummels won the FIFA World Cup 2014 with his national side, Germany. He has been a long-serving defender for both his national and club teams. His fans, friends and co-players acknowledged his contributions and congratulated him for his glorious career.
Hummels posted his message on Instagram
Hummels took to his Instagram to share an emotional, heartfelt video informing his followers about this inescapable moment in a footballer's life.
"I am ending my career this summer," he said.
Mats Hummels worked his way through the ranks of Bayern Munich's Junior team. He made his debut at the age of 18 and then switched his allegiance to Borussia Dortmund, where he became a key contributor under Jurgen Klopp, helping the side to win two titles.
Hummels's moment of glory came in 2014 when he started and played all the minutes for Germany in the FIFA World Cup alongside Jerome Boateng. Germany lifted their fourth World title after beating Argentina in the finals at Maracana Stadium.
Hummels returned to Bayern Munich intending to claim European glory. However, the title eluded him every single time. He returned to Borussia Dortmund in 2019. Hummels participated in two Champions League finals, both of which ended in heartbreak for him in the iconic Wembley Stadium. He moved to AS Roma in 2024.
Hummels played a total of 628 matches at the highest level of football. He represented Borussia Dortmund in 508 fixtures and Bayern Munich in 118 fixtures. He netted a total of 45 goals playing as a central defender.
