Argentine football icon Lionel Messi was at the centre of attention when he took to the pitch against the New York Red Bulls at the Chase Stadium. The left-footed magician had been lately struggling to find his form and missed his usual flare.
Miami came into the fixture at the back of three successive defeats. The Herons needed a victory to find some form heading into the season.

Lionel Messi surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo
The Herons hosted the New York Red Bulls at the Chase Stadium after their disappointing exit from the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Miami's two veterans, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, were amongst the scorers in a goal fest. Lionel Messi scored the final goal of the fixture to deny New York any chances of creeping back into the match. Messi linked up with a quick one-two at the edge of New York's box and then dribbled past 2 defenders to unleash a left-footed strike into the back of the net.
This ended Messi's goal drought that lasted for four matches. This also marked Messi's 859th career goal, and he became the youngest player to achieve this feat at the age of 37, going past his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Earlier, Messi's close friend and colleague, Luis Suarez, also scored for Miami in the 39th minute. The win propelled Inter Miami to the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference rankings. Last season's Supporters' Shield holders will need to put in a lot more effort if they are to retain their crown this season. They currently trail by 3 points to Columbus, who is at the top.
