Just four of the best third-placed sides will advance with the top two teams in each UEFA EURO 2024 group, ensuring a spot in the round of 16. Now that five groups have been finished, it is certain that the Netherlands, Slovakia, and Slovenia are three of the top four third-place teams and will move on to the round of 16.

If a team finishes third in Group F, they go straight to the round of 16 with four points; assuming they finish with three points, goal differential will be used to compare them to Hungary. Portugal was one of the teams that placed third in their group when the system was first implemented for UEFA EURO 2016.

Fernando Santos's team advanced to the round of 16 just by goal differential, and they later won the trophy. Portugal placed third once more at EURO 2020, however they were eliminated in the round of sixteen, with Ukraine, Switzerland, and Czech Republic all making it to the quarterfinals.

What are the confirmed matches for Round of 16 in UEFA Euro 2024?

Eleven teams already know their spots in the tournament's knockout phases for UEFA Euro 2024, which is taking place in Germany with only a single matchday remaining in the group stages.

It is confirmed that Switzerland and Italy will square off in the opening Round of 16 matchup. Germany, the hosts, are prepared to take against Denmark in an effort to outperform them from the last tournament. England's opponents will be the third-placed team in Group F (Turkey, Georgia, or Czechia), the Netherlands, or Slovakia. Hungary, the Netherlands, Slovakia, or the third-placed team from Group F (Turkey, Georgia, or Czechia) will face Spain.

Belgium will play the 2018 World Cup winners, France, in one of the most important games of this round. Portugal will play Slovenia or Hungary, depending on the results of Group F later today. The Round of 16 matches begin this Saturday as the sixteen teams look to make further progress in the competition without much difficulty.
