In their last UEFA Euro 2024 Group D match on Tuesday, Austria and the Netherlands faced off knowing that both teams were capable of finishing inside the top two and secure a spot in the round of sixteen. Austria looked to qualify if they defeat Netherlands and finish the group stage with no fewer than four points. Austria will only have three points and no chance of qualifying if they face defeat to the Netherlands because, even if they finish third, it will not likely be among the four teams in third place.

Donyell Malen attempted to get an Austrian cross out but instead booted the ball towards his own net, giving Austria an early lead. This is the tournament's sixth own goal and the first one to score goals.  In his 14th game for the national team, Romano Schmid netted his first goal for Austria. Austria regained control of the match with a 2-1 lead against the Netherlands. But in the 75th, Memphis Depay levelled the score.

With the Netherlands hoping to gain a winner to go above France in the group, it was all to play for. However, minutes after they got the equaliser they went back behind after a great goal from Marcel Sabitzer. In the end, Austria won the game 3-2 and are now headed to the knock-out stages of the competition.

Kylian Mbappe scores to take France into the knock-out stages

In the 56th minute of France's Euro 2024 Group D match versus Poland at the BVB Stadion Dortmund, Kylian Mbappe scored. Ten minutes after the second half began, Jakub Kiwior fouled Ousmane Dembele inside the penalty box, setting up Mbappe to score from the spot.

Mike Maignan stopped Robert Lewandowski's first attempt, but the referee was not satisfied by the goalkeeper's initial move and gave the penalty to be performed again. There was also a penalty at the other end. The FC Barcelona forward scored a goal that opened up the group, and he made no mistakes. The game ended 1-1 and since Austria won their game against the Netherlands, they end up topping the group.
