Taking look at potential route to the final for England during UEFA Euro 2024

Slovakia, who placed third in Group E at UEFA Euro 2024, will face England, who won Group C, in the round of 16 on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen. The route through the knockout stages that Gareth Southgate's team takes avoids many of the top opponents.

Although it appeared as though they would face the Netherlands in the round of 16, Slovakia was England's next opponent as Georgia shocked everyone by defeating Portugal 2-0. England is unable to play any of the nations on the opposite side of the draw—Spain, Germany, Portugal, France, and Belgium.

Although the Three Lions were unable to defeat Slovenia on Tuesday, they were still able to win the group as Serbia and Denmark were also goalless. They have won the group, but in order to try to secure a spot in the grand finale in Berlin on July 14, they must now win three knockout matches: the quarterfinal, semifinal, and round of 16. 

England's victory in the group has spared them a matchup with Germany in the round of sixteen, which would have been Southgate's team's opponent had they finished second in Group C. In six attempts, Slovakia has only managed one win, five losses, and one tie against England.

The match between the two countries in the UEFA Euro 2016 group stage ended in a 0-0 draw. Afterwards, England defeated Slovakia 2-1 at Wembley and 1-0 away from home to secure their spot in the 2018 World Cup. 

Taking look at potential opponents for England in UEFA Euro 2024?

There's a chance that the Euro 2020 championship will happen again. They would play the victor of Switzerland's match against Italy, who had won the previous European Championship at Wembley versus England via penalties. Dusseldorf would host the last-eight tie on Saturday, July 6.

Instead of facing France in the semifinals, Austria, the winners of Group D, will face England in their draw. If they advance to the final four, their other possible opponents are the Netherlands, Romania, and Turkey.
