Newly promoted Serie A side Como are making big strides in the transfer market as they look to sign former Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane. The club co-owned by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry looks to make Varane one of their marquee signings of the summer.

His high wages might be an issue but given the experience that he’ll add to the team would surely be a massive boost to the young team built by Cesc Fabregas and others. The talks are still on the initial stages between the two parties and nothing has been solidified as of now. There are plenty of other rumours surrounding the centre-back as well and he would look to assess everything before choosing his next club.

The 31-year-old remains a free agent at the moment because his contract ended after the conclusion of the season. After moving from Real Madrid to United in 2021, Raphael Varane earned 93 appearances for the team. When healthy, the Frenchman was among the finest defenders in the league, but he was forced to miss too much time on the field due to a series of ailments.

According to rumours, David Beckham, the president of Inter Miami and a legend of Manchester United, is eager to recruit Varane to his roster of elite players. Inter Miami, the MLS team that would pair the centre-back with stars including Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, has expressed interest in the player.

Raphael Varane reflects on three glorious years with Manchester United

Raphael Varane spoke to the club media last month as he bid adieu to Manchester United and its lovely supporters. He said, “It’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt. The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Manchester United player was insane, the atmosphere was amazing. When the fans go to Wembley it’s something they remember for life. To share that moment with them [winning the Carabao Cup] was absolutely amazing. Despite the fact we had a difficult season, I’m very positive for the future.”

The former Real Madrid superstar added, “The new owners are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy. I’ll see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye for the last game at home this season [against Newcastle] and it’s going to be a very emotional day for me, for sure.”
