Supporters from Paris St Germain's Boulogne Kop displayed a large 'Free Palestine' banner prior to the kickoff of their Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. This event occurred just eight days before France's upcoming Nations League match against Israel in Paris. PSG stated that they were not informed of any intentions to showcase this message.

The bigger banner displayed striking images of Jerusalem's renowned Dome of the Rock Mosque alongside the Palestinian and Lebanese flags. "War on the pitch, but peace in the world,” a message underneath said. "Does a child’s life in Gaza mean less than another?” another said.

The club said in a statement, "Parc des Princes is — and must remain — a place of communion around a common passion for soccer and firmly opposes any message of a political nature in its stadium."

PSG to face sanctions like other clubs

Last year, Celtic received a fine of 17,500 euros due to fans displaying Palestinian flags during a Champions League match, highlighting the ongoing discussions around political expression in sports. UEFA's verdict is awaited on the incident.

The European Confederation's regulations are very clear, "The dissemination or promotion of political messages by any means as well as any other form of political action inside or in the immediate vicinity of the stadium are strictly prohibited before, during, and after the match."

Looking ahead, France will face Israel at the Stade de France next Thursday. As anticipation builds for the event, there are important conversations to be had regarding security measures, especially in a country that hosts the largest Jewish community in Europe and a significant Muslim population.

Yonathan Arfi unequivocally demands sanctions in response to this outrageous banner. He emphasized that this is not a message of peace, but rather a blatant provocation of hatred. Arfi firmly concluded that those responsible for this banner must face serious consequences. Notably, PSG did not face any sanctions when its supporters condemned the war crimes in Gaza during the PSG-AC Milan match in late October 2023.y
