In the Premier League, Tottenham took on Newcastle in the early kickoff. The home team was hoping to earn a much-needed three points to ease some of the pressure on Ange Postecoglou. Despite their continued challenge for the league cup and a spot in Europe in 2025, Spurs were currently in 11th place at the start of the new year, raising concerns about the Australian following a run of disappointing performances.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, had a similarly uneven start to the season but rediscovered their rhythm before the end of the year. Four consecutive victories left them in fifth place and right on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League the following year. Dominic Solanke gave Tottenham the lead after just three minutes in a frantic opening to Saturday's matchup with Newcastle. However, they were quickly tied within two minutes when Anthony Gordon, filling in for injured first-team players Fraser Forster and Guglielmo Vicario, slid a cool finish past rookie Brandon Austin in goal.

Spurs loudly objected after replays revealed that Joelinton handled the ball during the build-up after intercepting a pass from Lucas Bergvall. VAR upheld the goal despite this, and the ruling has since been clarified. The home team is asking that the referee write it off for handball after Anthony Gordon's well-executed equaliser for Newcastle against Tottenham has angered Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou and his team.

When Dominic Solanke bullied his opponent and headed home from a high ball, he gave the North London team an early lead. Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak's goals helped the visitors complete a first-half comeback and grab a 2-1 lead, but Spurs supporters were not as impressed as the first team is yet to take the lead in the game. With another home victory over Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham, Newcastle extended their winning streak in all competitions to six games. Eddie Howe's team tied fourth-place Chelsea on points with the win, while the Spurs remained in 11th place. Alexander Isak continued his incredible scoring run.
