Erik ten Hag has been without a managerial position since October, when he was dismissed by Manchester United due to a disappointing start to the season. Despite leaving Manchester United at an all-time low, the Dutch manager still managed to win two silverware - the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in the second season.

Discussions with Leverkusen progressed after Ajax expressed significant interest in hiring Ten Hag. He had been considered a potential candidate to return to Amsterdam following the resignation of Francesco Farioli, but the approach from Leverkusen ultimately influenced the situation.

Before leading Manchester United, the Dutchman managed Eredivisie club Ajax. He had a memorable spell with the Dutch giants, winning three domestic league titles and reaching the UEFA Champions League semifinals with historic wins over giants like Real Madrid and Juventus. The Dutch club lost against Tottenham Hotspur in a sensational semifinal outing.

Taking up managerial duties at Bayer Leverkusen, Erik Ten Hag will get a squad that became Bundesliga champions in 2022-23 without losing a single game. The team also won the DFB-Pokal and ended as runners-up in the UEL. However, the team failed to defend any of its titles this season. This will be Ten Hag's fifth managerial stint in his coaching career. Previously, he managed Go Ahead Eagles, Bayern Munich II, Utrecht, Ajax, and Manchester United.
