Aurelien Tchouameni has faced some difficulties this season, but Carlo Ancelotti took the opportunity to commend the French midfielder following a strong performance against Manchester City.
Ancelotti highlighted the effectiveness of the partnership between Tchouameni and Dani Ceballos during the Champions League match on Wednesday night. He emphasized that Tchouameni brings a distinctive skill set to the team that differentiates him from established players like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
Tchouameni has faced criticism from fans and pundits this season due to his inconsistent performances. More often than not, he has been forced to fill the void in central defence as a makeshift centre-back, sacrificing his preferred holding role in midfield to address the sheer shortage of defenders in the backline.
Ancelotti defended Tchouameni
On Wednesday night, the Frenchman returned to his original position and delivered a strong performance as Real Madrid overcame Manchester City with a 3-1 victory, securing their place in the Round of 16. Tchouameni's composed display did not go unnoticed, prompting Ancelotti to elaborate on his importance to the team.
"Today everyone delivered, including him. He has returned to his position and when he is there, he shows all his quality," Ancelotti told reporters.
"Tchouameni... What else can I say? He is a very important player, very important for us. Because he has the exact characteristics. He will never be Toni Kroos, Modric or Ceballos. But Ceballos cannot be Tchouameni, just as Kroos and Modric aren't." Ancelotti added.
With Antonio Rudiger returning to full fitness and starting at centre-back against Manchester City, along with Tchouameni delivering a solid performance in midfield, fans can look forward to seeing him maintain his role as the No. 6 further ahead in the season.
