Greece tribute

In their UEFA Nations League match against England on Thursday night, Greece's team honored the late George Baldock during their celebrations, which came one day after the terrible man's passing. Greece held up a shirt with George Baldock's name as they cheered their initial goal at Wembley.

They had gone to Wembley on Thursday night to play England during the Nations League. The match took place the day following Greek international Baldock's body was discovered in the swimming pool of his Athens residence. Twelve caps were awarded to Baldock for Greece before his untimely drowning on Wednesday. In observance of the 31-year-old, both teams wore black armbands and there was a moment of silence.

Vangelis Pavlidis, the striker for Greece, danced beyond Trent Alexander-Arnold, John Stones, and Cole Palmer before putting his shot past Jordan Pickford. He then rushed to the corner flag and gestured to his armband. Then, when his teammates embraced him, he raised it in the air.

They then displayed a white Greece shirt with Baldock's number and name on it. With his goal at Wembley, Pavlidis gave his nation its first-ever goal. There was a minute of silence before kickoff in honor of the 31-year-old.

Baldock was born in Buckinghamshire, but his grandmother gave him the right to represent Greece. His teammates on the national team were grieved by his passing; he played his final game in the March Euro 2024 play-offs versus Georgia.

When Jude Bellingham equalized in the 87th minute, it appeared as though England had saved the match. However, there was still time for another twist: during the fourth minute of stoppage time, the brilliant Pavlidis appeared and shot beyond Jordan Pickford from close range.

Greece's triumph moved them to the top of the standings with a maximum of nine points, while England's first loss as interim manager Lee Carsley's team dropped them to second place with six points. For the youthful England side to win a few games, they need to quickly address the many problems that need to be fixed.
