Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed his belief that Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has the talent needed to excel at a top-five club in the Premier League.
Since arriving at Wolves in a £35 million deal from Atletico Madrid in December 2022, Cunha has showcased top-notch abilities that caught the attention of several prominent clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Nottingham Forest, during the January transfer window. The Brazilian forward has committed to Wolves by signing a new deal that includes a substantial £62.5m release clause, making him a prime target for this summer.
Arne Slot heaps praises for Cunha
Liverpool is actively seeking attacking reinforcements, and Slot has made it clear that Cunha is the type of player who would seamlessly integrate into his Liverpool squad.
At his press conference on Friday, Slot confidently stated that Cunha exemplifies the calibre of player he refers to when discussing comparisons between leagues where he has worked and this one.
‘I don’t know exactly where Wolves are at the moment… 17th, if you go to the Dutch league and look at the 17th [team] there’s no player who could play for Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord," Slot said.
"But Matheus Cunha is a quality player and he has the quality to play for one of the top five teams in England," he added.
The Brazilian forward has recorded 11 goals and four assists in 23 Premier League appearances this season. His capacity to drop deep and facilitate play has drawn comparisons to Roberto Firmino.
Concerns regarding Liverpool's current attacking options, coupled with the £62.5 million release clause in his contract active from this summer, according to BBC Sport could position Cunha as a compelling target.
Slot's words didn't imply that Cunha is currently a priority target for the summer, but he will undeniably remain on the radar of Liverpool’s recruitment team.
