The FA has formally reprimanded Marc Guehi and Crystal Palace over the defender's choice to write "I love Jesus" on his Rainbow captain's armband, but Mirror Football can disclose that he will not face any charges. Guehi scribbled on the Rainbow armband he was wearing during Saturday's draw between Palace and Newcastle. That made him vulnerable to a possible FA charge, as Mirror Football revealed earlier on Tuesday.
The laws of the Football Association state that, "initiative slogans/emblems promoting the game of football, respect and integrity," such as Rainbow Laces, but forbid "political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images."
However, the FA has now informed Mirror Football that their representatives have chosen to get in touch with Palace and Marc Guehi to "formally remind" them that, in accordance with Rule A4 of the apparel and advertising regulations, it is forbidden to display or incorporate any religious message on any article of apparel, football boots, or other equipment.
Guehi and Palace will not be charged by the FA as a result of the reprimand. On Saturday, Daniel Munoz saved Palace from a late tie after Guehi scored an own goal against Newcastle United. The defender's father is a church preacher, and he is a devoted Christian. Palace's official Rainbow Laces match was Saturday's encounter against the Magpies, marking the 11th year of the LGBT+ inclusion movement's return to the Premier League.
“Committed to being a fully inclusive club” : Ipswich Town
Ipswich captain, Sam Morsy, has decided not to wear the armband at all when they play on Tuesday night. Morsy's refusal was attributed to religious considerations, according to a Monday report from Mirror Football.
An Ipswich Town spokesperson said, "Ipswich Town Football Club is committed to being a fully inclusive club that welcomes everyone. We proudly support the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign and stand with the LGBTQ+ community in promoting equality and acceptance. During this year’s campaign, members of the club’s men’s and women’s first-teams visited our Foundation’s weekly LGBTQ+ football session, while the club also made a joint pledge of solidarity and inclusivity alongside Nottingham Forest ahead of Saturday’s game.”
