José Mourinho is expressing interest in Newcastle's managerial position should Eddie Howe depart from St James’ Park. The current head coach of Fenerbahce sees an opportunity to return to the Premier League and believes that Newcastle could be a suitable fit for his next role in England, given his previous managerial experience with Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham.
Jose Mourinho 'unhappy' in Turkey
Mourinho has recently voiced some concerns about his situation in Turkey following Fenerbahce’s 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor last Sunday. Having joined the club last summer after he departed from Roma in January, he is now exploring potential opportunities that align with his ambitions.
Mourinho has proactively engaged with intermediaries to stay informed about any updates regarding Newcastle. The 61-year-old had a social meeting with Newcastle's chairman, Yasir al-Rumayyan, at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in March, and he has nurtured that connection since then.
Additionally, during Manchester United's recent Europa League match in Istanbul, Mourinho took the opportunity to reconnect with former colleagues and English journalists, warmly greeting them as if they were old friends.
"Who wants to watch this Turkish league abroad? They have the Premier League, they have the French League, they have the German League, they have the Portuguese League, they have the Dutch League. Why should they see this? … It’s too grey, it’s too dark, smells bad. But that’s my job, and I will give everything to my job, to my club.” Mourinho said.
Howe continues to improve at Newcastle
Howe is currently in a stable position, feeling encouraged by recent victories against Chelsea and Arsenal after a challenging start to the season. However, given the aspirations of Newcastle’s Saudi owners, who are aiming for Champions League qualification, the long-term outlook remains uncertain.
“It feels good to still be here. I’m so pleased with how it’s going, so pleased to be in this position and still dreaming. I’m happy with the progress but you always want more and we haven’t got the one thing we wanted when we came in which was a trophy. That was the dream, that’s still the dream and still driving us. We believe we can achieve extraordinary things and that’s the focal point driving us every day. Qualifying for Europe again is one of our aims this season.” Howe said.
