The USA women's national team advanced to the 2024 Olympic gold medal match by defeating Germany 1-0 in the semifinals on Tuesday. With help from Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith scored in overtime to preserve American hopes of capturing their first gold medal since 2012.

Sophia Smith scored during the 95th minute to give the USA women an easy 1-0 win against Germany, and she almost had another goal nine minutes later. The Americans are the country with the most gold medals (four) but they haven't participated in the gold medal game since 2012, where they defeated Japan in order to win the Olympics for the third time in a row.

Smith was positioned in the box by Mallory Swanson after he dashed up the center of the field. Ann-Katrin Berger, the Germany goalkeeper, came out to try to stop her after she defeated Felicitas Rauch. However, Smith easily passed Berger with the ball after she emerged too soon.

Having four FIFA World Cups and four gold medals from the Olympics, the USWNT is among the most decorated teams in women's volleyball. But they hadn't made it to the Olympics final in a long time.

USA set to face Brazil in Women’s Olympics 2024 Gold medal match

In the other women's football semifinal of the day in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Brazil faced Spain.  Legend Marta was not present for Brazil because he was sent off versus Spain in the group stage and will now serve a ban. Although Spain was the current FIFA World Cup champion, they didn't play well today, losing 4–2 to Brazil.

Brazil's first goal came from a sad own goal by FC Barcelona's standout center defender, Irene Paredes. Gabi Portilho, Adriana, and Kerolin were Brazil's other scores today. Near the end, Salma Parulluelo scored twice, although they were merely consolation goals from the European squad.

Brazil will now face USA in the gold medal match on 10th August, meanwhile, Germany and Spain will meet in the Bronze medal match on 9th August.
