FC Barcelona star Ronald Araujo appears to be reconsidering his future with the club after a discussion with Sporting Director Deco on Tuesday night, as reported by Mundo Deportivo, citing anonymous sources.
In recent weeks, Italian publications like La Repubblica had noted Araujo's potential move to Juventus in January, but his recent conversations may suggest a change in direction.
On the eve of the Spanish Super Cup final, which Barcelona won against Real Madrid with a score of 5-2 in Jeddah, Catalan journalist Joan Fontes reported that Araujo had informed his fellow captains of his decision not to renew his contract, which is set to expire in mid-2026, to join Juventus.
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, recent events that unfolded on Tuesday night in Catalonia suggest that Araujo may be reconsidering his stance and could ultimately choose to remain with the club after all.
Araujo had been intent on fleeing to Italy, especially with President Joan Laporta's remarks at a press conference making it seem like the exit door was wide open. However, Deco has made some strides in persuading Araujo, who has now firmly reevaluated his stance and is on the verge of prolonging his stay at Camp Nou.
Deco reportedly emphasized that Barça has already clinched a title this season and stands as a formidable contender for all major trophies. He also advocated for a significant salary increase, noting that the club now operates under a 1:1 ratio and has gained financial flexibility through various signed agreements.
Araujo's place in the team was jeopardized when he lost his position to Inigo Martinez, who had formed an excellent partnership with Pau Cubarsi during Araujo's injury. This situation likely prompted the 25-year-old to consider leaving the club.
Now, with Martinez sidelined due to a torn hamstring, Araujo is poised to reclaim his prominence in the squad, starting with the crucial Copa del Rey last 16 clash against Real Betis in Montjuic on Wednesday.
"We believe that everyone is very useful for Barcelona and we want Araujo to continue. He is talking to Deco and we will find a solution. We appreciate him on a professional and personal level. There is room to find a solution for everyone," Laporta said.
