Why did the FC Barcelona keeper leave the club and join PSG?

Several young players, including Arnau Tenas, left FC Barcelona last summer. A product of La Masia, the custodian was thought to be the team's future first choice, but he ultimately left as a free agent, joining PSG shortly after his contract ran out.

Speaking in a conversation with Que T'hi Jugues (via Fabrizio Romano), Tenas now places the responsibility for his departure squarely at FC Barcelona's door, asserting that the team never extended his contract. He said, “I left Barça because the club didn’t offer me a contract renewal.”

Arnau Tenas stated emphatically that he would have accepted any contract FC Barcelona would have presented and that he would have been willing to leave the team after it was renewed in order to go on loan. But there was never a response from the La Liga Powerhouses. He added, “I would have signed any contract given by the club, even go on loan if they wanted.”

Did FC Barcelona offer a proposal to Arnau Tenas?

The agreement between Barcelona and Arnau Tenas ended on June 30, 2023. The club could have activated the two-year extension that was included in the agreement, but they chose not to as they believed his new salary would not be feasible given the club's present financial situation. But letting go of one of the brightest prospects in his position might not have been a good decision from the club.

Following this, it was reported that the Blaugrana attempted to negotiate a new contract with Tenas as well as his representatives; in fact, former head coach,Xavi Hernandez expressed his desire for the 23-year-old to rejoin the team. Tenas, however, is now claiming that he never received a contract proposal from FC Barcelona, which is what caused him to sign an agreement with PSG.

FC Barcelona has seen a lot of players join Paris Saint-Germain after leaving the club and Arnau Tenas was just one of them. Notably players like Neymar Jr., Lionel Messi, Oussmane Dembele, Dani Alves, Ronaldinho and Thiago Motta.
