Despite all of Manchester United's highs throughout his time, Erik ten Hag acknowledged his team was not good enough. After taking over in 2022, the Dutchman managed United for a little over two years until being fired in October, even though he had signed a one-year contract extension last season. After defeating rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final, the Red Devils struggled to sustain their success in his second season in charge, after winning the EFL Cup and earning a spot in the Champions League in his first season.

But after a poor start to the season, Erik Ten Hag's time at the club came to an end after the squad lost 2-1 to West Ham, dropping them to 14th position in the Premier League. The former manager expressed his fondness for Old Trafford in an interview with the SEG Stories podcast.

"I had already decided for myself, 'Okay, I'm not doing anything until July 1 (2025).'. If there's one thing I miss it's Old Trafford. You're always working towards a dot on the horizon, but you never get to the horizon. We’ve had many highs, there is always room for improvement and good is not enough. You can do better."

Several clubs have been linked with Ten Hag, including Borussia Dortmund and Feyenoord, since both have hired Niko Kovac and Robin van Persie, respectively, as well as with MLS. But according to the 55-year-old, he has no intention of returning to management this season. Ten Hag is still regarded as a respected person in football circles even after leaving Manchester United.

Struggle for Manchester United continues

Even if he is looking forward to prospects beyond this season, his accomplishments throughout his time are recognised. Ten Hag guided United to a top-four Premier League finish and two trophies, making him one of the team's most successful managers in recent years. With the Red Devils in 14th place in the standings when the former Ajax manager was fired, they are currently in 15th place under Ruben Amorim, his successor. Some supporters could eventually have a more positive opinion of the Dutchman's stay at Old Trafford.
