More than 89 million users may have been impacted by the reported selling of Steam account information on the deep web. Players may choose to update their Steam passwords as soon as possible to make sure that their personal information is secure, even though Valve has worked to strengthen the security of the gaming marketplace over the years.
Since its launch in 2003, Valve's service has grown to become the most widely used online video game distribution platform; most recently, Steam surpassed 40 million concurrent users for the first time in its existence. Over the years, various services have tried to unseat the PC gaming behemoth, but none have been successful. With Steam, most gamers now turn to it for interacting with friends and organising their game collections.
It hasn't been all sunshine and roses, though, as a recent milestone for Steam is being overshadowed by a regrettable security flaw that might endanger millions of users. In a LinkedIn post, the well-known cyber threat protection firm Underdark said that 89 million Steam records' worth of information was being offered for just $5,000 on the dark web. These facts consist of SMS message logs, user records, phone numbers, and one-time access codes, among other things.

Cyberattacks have also targeted many big companies
Many users are being warned to activate two-factor authentication, update their passwords, and be on the lookout for odd communication or possible phishing attempts. Even though it appears the data was exposed through a third-party vendor rather than Steam, many users are urging Valve to strengthen security to prevent this from happening in the future. The business has not yet released a comment. Game Freak acknowledged in 2024 that huge volumes of Pokémon data, including personnel details, source code for several previous releases, and unreleased titles, had been stolen in a data breach.
Cyberattacks have also targeted Ubisoft, Sony, and Insomniac in recent years. However, millions of people are still visiting the platform day, but Value has recently encountered some difficulties. Sales of the Switch Deck start to decline after the formal launch in January, falling from #3 on the Steam Charts to #47.
