Take-Two CEO explains why Rockstar does console exclusive on launch

PC gaming has been a huge driver of the video game industry and the CEO of Take-Two Interactive ‘Strauss Zelnick’ also acknowledges its importance. This comes ahead of the planned GTA 6 release this year and may kickstart some neurons among fans, however, he did clarify that Rockstar Games usually doesn’t go multiplatform.

Talking to IGN in an exclusive, Zelnick was asked if not releasing GTA 6 will have any impact. Despite Civilization 7 launching on multiple platforms, other games don’t follow the same. “Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms,” he said.

This means there is currently no day-one release for GTA 6 in sight. There will eventually be one, but as mentioned, Rockstar will likely focus on console releases. Talking about missed opportunities, Zelnick mentioned that PC release of games can make 40% or more of all sales which they may miss early on in the launch.

PC platform rises in popularity, but GTA 6 remains exclusive

It’s no secret that PC gaming is much more popular than any other platform. Even Zelnick agrees with this fact. “We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue,” he said.

However, he also believes that GTA 6 is going to be the biggest launch and will create a surge in sales of consoles like the Xbox Series X/S and PS5/PS5 Pro. Since the game is going to be next-gen exclusive, gamers across older consoles are also expected to make a move.

When you have a big title in the market and we have many of them coming, historically that has sold consoles,” Zelnick said, further adding, “And I think that will happen this year. I don't think tariffs are going to be our friend, but I think there will be a meaningful uptick in console sales in calendar 25 because of the release schedule, not just coming from us, but coming from others.”

Why is GTA 6 not coming to PC if the platform is dominant?

As Zelnick mentioned, Rockstar has historically released all of their games on consoles first. While he didn’t state any specific factors, there are a lot. While PC as a platform is more popular, the instances of piracy are also much more prevalent. With an expected price of $100, it’ll likely be the case. Secondly, releasing on a single platform may help address any issues quickly without too much workload.
