Strauss Zelnick shares his views on AI

Artificial intelligence, or AI, has been the main focus of companies nowadays. Even in the game industry, there has been a huge debate regarding the use of AI leading to the massive SAG-AFTRA strike, which is currently ongoing. Speaking on the topic of AI, Take-Two CEO ‘Strauss Zelnick’ expressed his views.

Talking to GameIndustryBiz, Zelnick was asked about the role of AI in Take-Two’s future and if there should be any guardrails that are needed. “Artificial intelligence is an oxymoron; there's no such thing. Machine learning: machines don't learn. Those are convenient ways to explain to human beings what looks like magic. The bottom line is that these are digital tools and we've used digital tools forever,” Zelnick said.

‘No such thing as AI’

Zelnick’s take on artificial intelligence (AI) is quite interesting and something that he previously expressed. In an interview with CNBC last year, he said that this tech had been available and used in game development long before it was popular.

He further expressed that these are tools that won’t directly help make games but assist the developers to make better games. “I have no doubt that what is considered AI today will help make our business more efficient and help us do better work, but it won't reduce employment,” he further added.

Take-Two will not infringe on other people's IP

There are many ethical concerns regarding the use of AI, especially after the revelation that these models are based on copyrighted material. However, Take-Two seems to be cautious of this, as they believe AI shouldn’t infringe on other people's intellectual property.

After all, GTA 6 is expected to be one of the biggest releases and the company will likely not take any chance of getting sued by using copyrighted material from other people.

“We're mindful of what technology we use to make sure that it respects others' intellectual property and allows us to protect our own. Apart from that, I really can't think of any new guardrails that need to be implemented,” he said.
