Riot Games have now defended their controversial Ahri cosmetic skin that the company announced, celebrating Faker’s addition to the Hall of Legends. While the base cosmetics are decently priced, the one containing Faker’s signature costs 59,260 RP, or around $450.

The company and developers already received a huge backlash from the League of Legends community with its reveal. However, Riot Games does not seem to be backing down on its price, prompting players to claim they will not be supporting the bundle.

The recent situation with the Faker’s Hall of Legends trophy being damaged also did not help Riot Games. The talk of the overpriced skin bundle once again surfaced, with many taking shots at the company, saying “We could not afford good quality trophy before milking with the Ahri skin”.

Riot Games justifies the absurd price tag

Responding to the controversy, Head of League Studio at Riot Games, Meddler, justified the $450 bundle only to receive even more backlash from the fans. The justification is that it is necessary to cover the costs of esports.

These events as per Meddler are necessary and provide a variety of options to the fans. The lowest-priced event pass which costs 1,950 RP is also available for players who want to join in the celebration. However, he justifies the more expensive bundle as necessary to make “esports financially sustainable”.

“This is a time where we believe we should also offer really expensive versions, akin to Collectors editions/collectables in other contexts. Those are created for a very small part of the audience that wants that sort of price point in exchange for a lot more exclusivity,” Meddler said.

Responding to Meddler, one of the fans said, “You can celebrate pro players/teams in so many other ways that help cover costs”. Further adding that while these types of events are necessary, the Hall of Fame is there to celebrate Faker and his achievements. Putting an overpriced bundle just leaves a majority of players out in the dry.
