Overwatch 2 under pressure following Marvel Rival’s success

It won’t be wrong to say Marvel Rivals isn’t inspired by Overwatch, on the contrary, the resemblance is heavy. However, the game is quite popular among the community thanks to a few simple reasons like free-to-play launch and hero availability. As a result, its competitor, Overwatch 2 is being pressured to increase efforts towards its community.

The game or the development team is under pressure to win back the audience they lost after the release of Marvel Rivals. Speaking to GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller revealed the team is looking to make the game more interesting.

“We're obviously in a new competitive landscape that I think, for Overwatch, we've never really been in before, to this extent where there's another game that's so similar to the one that we've created,” Keller said further adding, “There is pressure on the Overwatch team, and a lot of it is internal.”

Overwatch 2 looking to shake things up

The developers behind Overwatch 2 recently revealed some big changes with season 15, specifically how the heroes work. With new sessions, heroes will level up which will provide them perks that can drastically change the direction of the game. These perks give players new abilities or boost to existing ones providing a fresh way to play the game.

“I look at what happens in a game of Overwatch, and a lot of times, when you get enough hours in the game, it almost feels like you can be going through the motions sometimes. What we want to be able to do is to inject a bit of freshness into the game, but not just for variety’s sake. We want to increase the depth of play,” Keller said.

Can Overwatch 2 compete with Marvel Rivals?

For now, Overwatch 2 seems to be struggling with player count and Marvel Rivals wasn’t the only reason for this. The game had multiple issues long before and the arrival of Marvel Rivals only increased the problems. However, the new concept seems interesting, and if done correctly the game may be able to find lost audience. Plus the return in China once again may help a bit.
