Following the exit of Blizzard from China back in 2023, Overwatch 2 is finally making a return after two long years. Set to relaunch on February 19, 2025, the game will officially be back along with all user data, so players do not have to star over.
The sudden departure from the China was due to a licence agreement issue between NetEase and Blizzard. This happened before the Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard, leading to both companies coming into a new agreement to bring back games last year, although Overwatch 2 did take it’s sweet time.
This comes following the announcement of China hosting OWCS Champions Clash 2025. In general, Overwatch 2 announced that China will also be joining the 2025 Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS) as one of the four official regions. The tournament will take place at the Hangzhou Esports Center.

Overwatch 2 might face competition with the comeback
Since the game was gone for some time, the recent release Marvel Rivals have filled the spot for hero shooter and, so far, fans are loving the game. Many people like the overall improvements and while the no role queue does have its disadvantage, most people generally like they are able to play what they want.
Overwatch 2 is also planning to bring back the 6v6 mode, and is currently added as an experimental feature to further improve upon. Bringing back the complete player data is also a huge plus as players can quickly be onboarded.
One advantage Overwatch currently have over Marvel Rivals is the esports scene. Having an already established esports scene can help the game revive its community, and while it’s not a guarantee, this is one of the few options they have left.
