Shuhei Yoshida either had to join PlayStation indie or leave after stepping down as president

Former PlayStation head ‘Shuhei Yoshida’ recently parted ways with the company after three decades of making video games. Taking on the role of PlayStation’s Global president back in 2008, Yoshida spent over a decade helping the company make some incredible games before stepping down in 2019 to become the head of PlayStation Indies.

Earlier this year, Yoshida exited Sony on a high note with love from gamers across the globe. However, he did tell some interesting things. During an interview with VentureBeat, the former PlayStation exec revealed he had no choice but to lead indies roles. It was either that or leaving the company.

“Well, I had no choice. When Jim asked me to do the indie job, the choice was to do that or leave the company. But I felt very strongly about the state of PlayStation and indies. I really wanted to do this. I believed I could do something unique for that purpose,” Yoshida said.

Yoshida took on the role due to his love for gaming

Now that Yoshida is no longer working at Sony, he revealed that switching from first-party games to indie was a big change, even bigger than leaving the company. That said, he isn’t complaining about working on Indie games, in fact, he loved video games and was glad he could help indie publishers and developers.

“I’m very lucky that the indie community, the publishers and developers I work closely with–they believed that they could use my help. I became an adviser for some of these companies,” he further added.

Yoshida was also not completely on board with live-service games

In a previous interview, the former PlayStation boss revealed that after he stepped down from his position, the company allocated a lot of resources which was likely the reason behind Sony’s recent push for live-service games. Yoshida joked that if he were present, he would have advised against it so maybe that’s why they removed him.
