Do cheaters in video games deserve a second chance? Epic Games believes they do as the company recently announced changes to its permanent ban policy for first-time offenders in Fortnite. In an official post, Epic announced they would provide cheaters another chance to prove they have changed. Although the first offense will not entirely go unpunished.

“While maintaining game integrity is our top priority, we also believe in allowing second chances for players who made a bad decision and have learned from it,” Epic wrote. “Starting in April, we’ll be moving to a one-year matchmaking ban for first-time cheating offenses, allowing former cheaters to learn from their mistakes while still punishing and deterring cheating. A second offense will result in a lifetime ban.”

Here are the highlight points for the new cheating policy in Fortnite

  • Players who have used cheats: One-year matchmaking ban for the first offense, lifetime ban for the second.
  • Players who have used cheats and participate in tournaments: One-year matchmaking ban + immediate lifetime ban from tournaments + potential loss of past tournament winnings. A second offense of using cheats will result in a lifetime ban.
  • Players who have sold cheats, or broken other rules resulting in a lifetime ban: Nothing changes. The lifetime ban is still in effect. Additional consequences may include legal repercussions.

More legal actions against Fortnite cheaters and Hackers

Even if Epic Games is planning to give Fortnite cheaters another chance to redeem themselves, they also made a clear stand against cheating, especially for repeat and extreme offenders. The company has filed a new lawsuit against an individual who was stealing and selling Fortnite accounts.

There are already a few lawsuits ongoing on similar matters and the threat of lawsuits has led Cronus to remove advertisements for Fortnite and Rocket League scripts from their websites. Players using Cronus will receive a permanent ban from tournaments as the device also comes under cheating.
