Ubisoft recently announced a massive delay in the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows. The game was set to release this month, but an internal decision has pulled the release into February 2025. The reason for this was said to further polish the game before launch, however, new reports reveal that the devs were already asking for a delay long before.

Talking to some internal sources, Insider Gaming revealed that one of the main reasons for the company delaying the new Assassin's Creed game was also Star Wars Outlaw massively underperforming. The game reportedly sold only a million copies in a month, which may not sound bad until the numbers add up to bring the revenue to just over $70 million.

For comparison, Black Myth Wukong sold over 20 million copies in the same period. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 sold over 2 million copies within three weeks of release. Compared to these two, Star Wars is a massive franchise.

Devs were already urging for a delay

This, however, is only half of the story, as further reports say that the developers were already pushing for a delay months before. It was only approved following the setback for Star Wars Outlaw, and not only that, but the company has also decided to go back to releasing the game on Steam Day 1, which wasn’t the plan with the previous release of Assassin's Creed Shadows.

As for the controversy regarding Yasuke, he will still be a part of the game, but the company is focusing on addressing other issues raised by the Japanese audience regarding historical and cultural concerns that may include tweaking Yasuke’s story and fixing other in-game assets to be more accurate. Hopefully, the company will be able to create something players want.
