A big delay to Assassin’s Creed Shadows was recently announced by Ubisoft, with current pre-orders being refunded. The initial launch was planned this year in November, the release has now been shifted to February 14th, 2025. This comes as a highly unusual move, along with the decision to launch the game on multiple platforms, including Steam.

“This is an ambitious addition to the franchise, a rick experience that can be lived through the eyes of two unique protagonists, but we realized we need more time to polish and refine the experience, pushing further some of our key features,” the official statement said.

The reason Ubisoft cited was the team looking to further polish the game before release. This likely came after fan criticism due to multiple game breaking glitches, forcing them to reload the missions. “While the game is feature complete, the learnings from the Star Wars Outlaws release led us to provide additional time to further polish the title,” it further added.

In addition to the cancellation of all pre-orders, Ubisoft have also promised that all future pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed Shadows will receive the first expansion of the game for free.

Ubisoft to release Day 1 on Steam

For a while now, Ubisoft games remained exclusive to their launcher and were released on other digital platforms some time later. This was likely to prevent playing the platform cut on sales. The decision to move away from exclusivity was likely due to reduced sales as cited by Ubisoft that despite good response for Star Wars Outlaw, sales did not meet expectations.

Starting with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft have decided that the game will be available on Steam Day 1 on launch. Not only that, this will also be the star of Day 1 Steam release for all Ubisoft games. While it is hard to tell how well it would work out for the company, it will certainly be better for everyone. Despite the negative reviews, AAA games usually sell well on the platform.
