One of the biggest highlight points of the AMD RX 9000 series GPUs is FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4. The new upscaling tech is set to bring an uplift in performance for the new AMD graphics card released this March. An interesting thing that came to light is the FSR 4 compatibility with games featuring an older variant.

The FSR 4 is limited to AMD GPUs featuring RDNA 4 architecture, meaning only the RX 9000 series will have access to the new tech. This was one of the most debated points as FSR 3.1 was available across any GPU. This is likely due to the use of AI technologies similar to Nvidia DLSS. Despite the limitation, FSR 4 will be available as an upgrade to all games with FSR 3.1 support.
FSR 4 expected to bring huge performance improvement
Since AMD isn’t competing in the high-end GPU market, FSR 4 brings a lot to its table. Especially since they need to gain the trust of budget gamers. The company is yet to reveal the new feature, however, a promotional image making rounds across the internet has made a few things clear.
First, the technology is limited to the latest AMD graphics card. This means older cards will not be compatible which is a bold move and is likely taken keeping the improvements in mind. Second, all games with FSR 3.1 integration will receive an instant upgrade. This is another feature that fans may like if the performance improvement is significant.
The FSR 4 is one of the most anticipated features. What gives this an edge over DLSS is the possible seamless integration allowing an easy upgrade without waiting for game developers to make changes. This means gamers will not have to wait for much longer to have developers implement the new upscaling technology as everything takes place on a driver level. This will also help AMD avoid bad press.
What is FSR and DLSS?
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and Deep learning super sampling (DLSS) are two upscaling methods. Using this technology, the GPU renders an image at a lower resolution and then upscales using AI. This feature is great for older GPUs that are struggling to keep up with recent games.
