Barbados Royals all-rounder Dunith Wellalage suffered an unfortunate run-out dismissal in a bid to take his team over the line against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024. Sherfane Rutherford delivered a bullet throw at the non-striker's end a brilliant knock by the Sri Lankan.

Invited to bat first at Warner Park in Basseterre, the Patriots got off to a horror start, losing three of their top-order players - Evin Lewis, captain Andre Fletcher, and Kyle Mayers - for a duck. However, an 82-run partnership between Wanindu Hasaranga and Mikyle Louis rescued them.

Ryan John and Josh Clarkson also contributed in the lower order to take them to a competitive total of 153/8. Wellalage was the pick of the bowler for the Royals with three wickets. Maheesh Theekshana and Obed McCoy took two wickets each.

Batting in reply, Royals also suffered a similar start, losing opener Rahkeem Cornwall for a two-ball duck. Despite getting a good start, keeper-batter Quinton de Kock failed to capitalize and departed for just 19 runs. It was Kadeem Alleyne and Wellalage who then added life to their innings.

Wellalage dominates Patriots in both departments

The spin all-rounder played a crucial knock (39 off 32 balls) while putting together two match-winning partnerships with Alleyne and skipper Rovman Powell. Meanwhile, in the 17th over of the second innings, Wellalage was sent packing by Rutherford with a stunning throw.

Powell played a mistimed pull shot to deep mid-wicket off Anrich Nortje and the duo attempted for a second run. The Caribbean all-rounder charged towards the ball and threw it at the bowler’s end. Nortje tried to collect it but fumbled. However, the ball deflected off his hands and hit the stumps before the batter managed to enter the crease.

Despite an unexpected dismissal, the Royals managed to win the game thanks to the vital contributions of Jason Holder and Nyeem Young. Wellalage was adjudged Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance. With this two-wicket win, the Royals moved to the second spot in the CPL 2024 points table.
