It was an action-packed day in St. Lucia as the final group match of the T20 World Cup was played between West Indies and Afghanistan. The home team posted a huge 218 on the board from their 20 overs. The two teams had come to St. Lucia having won three prior games and making it to the next phase of the tournament. 

Azmatullah Omarzai broke the hearts of all the fans in the stadium with a brilliant piece of fielding. Nicholas Pooran who was batting on 97 hit the ball towards the cover region and tried to go back for the second run. 

Sensing this, the Afghan player picked up the ball and threw it towards the wicket-keeper. The ball hit the stumps on the full and the direct-hit caught Nicholas Pooran short of his crease. 

It was a sad end to his innings, as Nicholas Pooran fell two runs short of as well deserved century. The West Indian star got a massive ovation once he went back to the dugout from his teammates and the crowd on his his amazing knock. 

Nicholas Pooran smashes Azmatullah Omarzai for 36 runs 

Earlier in the day, Azmatullah Omarzai saw his name go down in the history books for all the wrong reasons. The Afghanistan bowler conceded 36 runs with Nicholas Pooran smashing him to all parts of the stadium. 

It was the costliest over of this T20 World Cup as the West Indians raced to a fast start. The home team reached 73/1 from 4 overs after that fateful over by Azmatullah Omarzai. 

West Indies ended their total with 218 on the board which is the joint 4th highest team total in T20 World Cup history. Afghanistan on the other hand had a day to forget with the ball as Noor Ahmad with 0/20 from his 4 overs was the best bowler on show. 

The Afghans will face India in their first Super-8 match in Barbados on the 20th of June. In the last encounter between these two sides, two super-overs were played before the winner could be decided. Rohit Sharma had scored his 5th T20I ton and led India to a huge score before the Afghans fought back. 

West Indies will stay put in St. Lucia as they host defending champions England in their first Super-8 encounter on the 19th of June. Co-hosts United States of America start of the proceedings on the 19th of June when they face South Africa in Antigua.
