Ajit Agarkar was in the press conference to announce India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. One of the main talking points of the conversation was Shubman Gill being dropped from the squad. The Indian Chief Selector explained the reason behind Gill's massive snub. While he regarded Gill to be a quality player, Agarkar noted his poor form.
In the process, Agarkar confirmed that the 26-year-old was snubbed due to not living up to the expectations in the last few months. "We know what quality player Shubman Gill is, short of runs at the moment. Unfortunately he missed out this T20 World Cup and last World Cup too," Agarkar said in the press conference.

Gill missed out of the Indian T20 World Cup squad both in 2024 and 2026. While he wasn't in a good touch before the T20 WC in 2024, the star batter had a good form in the IPL in 2025. It meant he made his return to the T20I side in the Asia Cup. However, he could not live up to his expectations in the 20-over format since then.
