The seventh game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will feature two sides that have different goals in mind. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will host Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their respective second game of the season. Hyderabad, playing in front of their home crowd for the second successive game, will want to keep up their high-flying form.
Pat Cummins’ side had posted the second-highest team total in IPL history against Rajasthan Royals. Ishan Kishan’s century and Travis Head’s fifty had enabled the side to reach a massive 286 runs on the board and win the game by 44 runs. Lucknow, on the other hand, lost their opening game of the season to Delhi Capitals.
LSG had managed to score 209 runs from their 20 overs, thanks to fifties by Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran. In reply, LSG bowlers had reduced DC to 65 for five before Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, and Tristan Stubbs came up with a gritty fightback. Did you know? Last time Hyderabad and Lucknow met in the IPL, the match turned into a one-sided contest.
Sunrisers Hyderabad hammer Lucknow Super Giants by ten wickets
The 57th game of IPL 2024 season saw Lucknow travel down south to take on high-flying Hyderabad in the latter’s backyard. By that point in the season, SRH were well and truly on their way to the top two spots in the points table. Lucknow needed a win to keep their fast-fading playoff hopes alive. KL Rahul, playing against his former side, won the toss and batted first.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the charge for the hosts early with two key wickets. The right-seamer dismissed Quinton de Kock for two runs and Marcus Stoinis for three. Rahul played 33 balls to score his 29 runs before he was caught by T Nataraj to give Cummins his first wicket of the game. Nicholas Pooran with 48 not out and Ayush Badoni’s unbeaten 55 helped LSG reach 165 on the board.
Just when it seemed like Lucknow had posted a decent score, their bowlers ran into the rampaging duo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. The first over of the chase produced just eight runs, but the carnage began from the next over onwards. Yash Thakur conceded 17 in his opening while Krishnappa Gowtham gave 22 runs from his second over.
Naveen Ul Haq, who was bowling the fifth over of the innings, was smacked for 23 runs. Australian batter Travis Head reached his fifty off just 16 balls to lay down the marker. By the end of the sixth over mark, SRH had scored 107 runs as Lucknow bowlers looked clueless with the ball.
Abhishek Sharma too reached his fifty off just 19 balls when he hit Ayush Badoni for a six. The end came in the fourth ball of the tenth over when Sharma hit Yash Thakur for a six to seal a ten-wicket win with 62 balls to spare. This was one of the most one-sided games in the history of the IPL.
KL Rahul and Sanjiv Goenka, the LSG owner, had a public fallout as the two were seen engaged in a public spat. This resulted in Rahul leaving the franchise at the end of the season, and Rishabh Pant being purchased for INR 27 Crores and named the captain of the side.
