A controversial third umpire decision in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 between Madhya Pradesh and Mumbai led to widespread criticism from fans on social media. The third umpire initially overturned the decision after being reviewed by Shreyas Iyer. But Rajat Patidar's appeal for the same led to him accepting his mistake.

It was the last over of the match between Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh. Shardul Thakur was operating it and tried to go as wide as possible. As Rajat was hitting the ball cleanly, there was no option for Shardul but to bowl way too wide towards the off-stump.

One such delivery was directed towards the wide line. Rajat Patidar tried to move away from the crease to reach out to the ball. But it was way too wide even from the white line. According to the rules, it was a wide delivery. The fielding captain Shreyas thought the ball was not wide enough. He thought the ball was within the inner line.

The third umpire reconsiders the wide decision

Hence, the Mumbai skipper reviewed the decision. The third umpire seemed to be convinced initially that the ball was not too wide. He thought the batter moved away and the ball did not move away enough. Hence, he asked the on-field umpire to reverse his decision.

As the on-field umpire followed the instruction of the third umpire, Rajat was confused. He saw that the ball was delivered way too wide of the line. He hence headed to the on-field umpire and mentioned the same. The MP skipper took the decision upstairs from his end. This time around, the third umpire was under a bit of pressure.

He looked at the delivery again and claimed that he missed the part which Patidar mentioned. He again asked the on-field umpire to stay with the original decision. Fans were furious with it and expressed their frustration on social media. Many claimed the umpires to be biased towards one team. The sequence has gone viral on social media.
