In a dramatic IPL 2025 auction held in Jeddah, Shreyas Iyer emerged as the Punjab Kings' star signing, fetching a staggering ₹26.75 crore. This made him the most expensive Indian player in IPL history—until Rishabh Pant shattered the record moments later, joining Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore.
Iyer, a proven leader with a title-winning stint at Kolkata Knight Riders, was at the centre of a fierce bidding war between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. Expressing his excitement, Iyer said in a franchise-released video, “Delighted to join the Punjab Kings family. I can’t wait to kickstart the season.”
Will Shreyas Iyer lead the PBKS?
However, Punjab Kings' head coach Ricky Ponting shared an intriguing update about Iyer’s potential captaincy role. “I haven’t spoken to Shreyas Iyer yet about captaincy. I called him before the auction, but he didn’t pick up,” Ponting revealed.
The former Australian skipper, however, expressed optimism, highlighting Iyer's leadership success and his eagerness to reunite with him. With Punjab aiming for their maiden IPL title, all eyes are now on how Iyer and Ponting will shape the team’s fortunes in the upcoming season.
