Shubman Gill broke many records in the Edgbaston Test between India and England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. The Indian skipper scored 269 runs in the first innings and followed it up with 161 runs in the second innings to cap off a brilliant outing with the bat. Gill is the only batter in Test cricket history to register a double hundred and a score of over 150 in a single Test match.
In the process, he joined the elite list of batters to have scored 400 or more runs in a single Test match. Apart from him, the list features some of the greatest Test batters of all time, like Kumar Sangakkara and Brian Lara. Brian Lara became the first and only batter to date to score 400 or more runs in a single innings of a Test match. The former West Indian captain did so in the Test against England at St. John's in 2004. In the only innings he played, the Southpaw scored exactly 400 runs and remained unbeaten, a record that still remains unbeaten.
Kumar Sangakkara hammered Bangladesh in both innings of the Chattogram Test in 2014. The Sri Lankan batter scored 319 runs in the first innings and followed it up with 105 in the second innings. Together, the Southpaw scored 424 runs in the Test, which is the fourth-highest for a batter in a single Test match.
Mark Taylor
Mark Taylor scored runs for fun in the Peshawar Test against Pakistan in 1998. In the first innings, the Australian batter opened the innings and scored a whopping 334* to put his side in the driver's seat. Further in the second innings, he scored 92 and came close to smashing his second ton of the match. In the process, he notched up 426 runs in the match.
Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill is second in the list of batters with the most runs in a single Test match. The Indian Test captain scored 269 runs in the first innings and broke many records in the process. He batted well even in the second innings by scoring 161 to accumulate 430 runs in the Test match. He has the most runs in a single Test match for an Asian batter.
Graham Gooch had a great outing against India in the Lord's Test in 1991. The English opener smashed 323 in the first innings and followed it up with 123 in the second innings to become the first batter to score a triple hundred and a hundred in the same Test. In the match, his aggregate was 456 runs, which is still the highest for a batter in a single Test.
