Just after lunch, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill put up a 129-run partnership. As the first session came to an end, India lost two wickets: KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan. Running between the wickets and shouting with one another were two of the most notable aspects of the pair's intelligent cricket performance during their partnership.

Jasiwal instructed Shubman Gill to say "no" loudly to stop him from rushing because he tended to do so as soon as he struck the ball. "Haan, haan bolte rehana bas. Meri aadat hain aage jaane ki. Haan, bas nahi nahi. Mereko zor se no boldo. Meri aadat hain lekein. Please keep telling me. It's my habit to move ahead. "Just tell me loudly 'no', but it is my habit," said Jaiswal to Gill.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scripted history in England

In one amusing instance, Jaiswal was upset to see Gill yelling "no" loudly because he thought there was an easy escape. "Arre aajao yaar. Bhaiyya year," said Jaiswal. In the recent tour matches against the England Lions, the southpaw was twice dismissed off deliveries outside off, but Jaiswal avoided making the same mistakes at Headingley. In the first Test, Jaiswal set several milestones along the route to his century. Jaiswal's first hundred made him the fifth Indian batter to score in England. Jaiswal's third century against England and his fifth overall in Test cricket.

Ben Stokes, the captain of England, managed to break through and end with 2/43 after dismissing Jaiswal, who was anchoring the innings early on, just after tea. India's 359-run total surpassed their 2022 Edgbaston opening-day mark of 338/7. In 2003, South Africa scored 362/4 at The Oval, the last time a touring side scored as many runs on Day 1 in England.
