Jasprit Bumrah named captain of Wisden’s Test team of year; Pat Cummins and Travis Head amongst notable omissions

Wisden released its Test team of the year and it has named leading pacer Jasprit Bumrah as the captain of the side. 31-year-old Jasprit Bumrah played 13 Test matches in 2024, picked 71 wickets and took fifers on five occasions. His best of 6/45 came against England during the Visakhapatnam match. 

Jasprit Bumrah had a great tour of Australia where he picked up 32 wickets with a best of 6/76 during the Gabba Test match. The right-arm pacer led India to win during the Perth Test and also was named captain of the side during the Sydney Test. After suffering an injury while bowling in the first innings, Bumrah’s loss was felt as he didn’t come out in the second innings. 

Meanwhile, Australian duo Travis Head and Pat Cummins have been shockingly omitted. Travis Head was the best batter during the recent series against India with two centuries. Head had scored 608 runs from nine matches with three centuries and one half-century. Australian skipper Pat Cummins had a stellar year scoring 306 runs with the bat including his career-best 64 not out and also picked 37 wickets with two fifers. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja included in the list 

Wisden’s Test team of the year included Yashasvi Jaiswal as the opener along with English batter Ben Duckett. The young batter played 15 games and scored 1478 runs with three centuries and nine half-centuries with an average of 54. Ben Duckett had a splendid year with the bat scoring 1149 runs from 17 matches with an average of 37. 

Former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has also been included along with England batting duo Joe Root and Harry Brook. 34-year-old Joe Root had yet another amazing year with 1556 runs from 17 matches with six tons and five fifties. Harry Brook had been in great form with the bat in 2024 scoring a memorable 317 during the Multan Test against Pakistan.  

Sri Lankan star Kamindu Mendis has also been included after his tremendous start to his Test career. Wicketkeeping duties have been entrusted to Jamie Smith, the 24-year-old made his Test debut in 2024 and has been impressive. Ravindra Jadeja is the only regular spinner in the side. The 36-year-old scored 527 runs with the bat and also picked 48 wickets with the ball. Apart from Bumrah, the pace bowling department includes Gus Atkinson and Kiwi pacer Matt Henry who had a great 2024 with the ball.
