Formula 1 is the pinnacle of car racing and the most popular motorsport watched by people around the world. But many often wonder why Formula 1 is called Formula 1. Are there any stories and reasons behind it? Here we answer all these questions.

Why Formula 1 is Formula 1?

FIA is actually AIACR

Federation Internationale de Automobile or FIA was actually called AIACR (The Association Internationale Des Automobile Clubs Reconnus) from 1931 to 1939. It was a world championship hosted in Europe. The participants were Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, and Auto Union. The world championship continued till the world war 2 broke out in 1939.

Formula 1 origins

After World War 2, AIACR wanted to rebuild motor racing. It's new president Augustin Perouse initiated a new Grand Prix formula. They also changed the name of AIACR to FIA. In 1949 it was decided that the FIA Formula One world championship would happen in 1950. Since then, each year the championship is conducted and races happen all around the world.

Why is it Formula One?

The races and cars had a specific rule or a "formula" that every racer had to follow, which led to it being Formula Internationale. Some even suggested the championship to be Formula A but in the end Formula 1 was decided to be the final name and was immediately recognised by the people.

Championship Origins

Initially, there were seven rounds in Formula 1. The races happened in Britain, Monaco, America, Switzerland, Belgium, France, and Italy. American round was added to give the sport an international flavour which took place in the Indianapolis 500.

Until 1958 championships were issued only to the drivers and not the constructors. First place finish would have 8 points, second place would have 6 points, 4 for third place, 3 for fourth place, 2 for fifth place, and the fastest lap winner would take an extra point.

First race ever in Formula 1

The first race in Formula One took place in Britain soil and Silverstone was chosen for the Inaugural race. The Silverstone Circuit had all the facilities. It is called as the Home of Formula 1. On March 13th, 1950 the inaugural race happened at the circuit.
